The multi-instrumentalist and 16-time Grammy nominee will explore some relatively new musical territory as a frontman for The Duke Ellington Orchestra from tonight, May 16 through May 18 at the Blue Note. The Ellington Orchestra will perform without McKnight on May 19.

(5/15/2012) Concerts for City Greens is dedicating four of this summer’s free, outdoor concerts to the music of its illustrious song contest judges. The award-winning series, that brings the sounds of music to heart of Midtown, will showcase Amanda McBroom (May 30), Neil Sedaka (August 1), Ann Hampton Callaway (September 12) and Michael John LaChuisa (October 3). These four – plus David Friedman and Matthew Parillo – are serving as judges for the first Concerts for City Greens Songwriting Contest. (The quadruple-platinum songwriter and Today Show regular David Friedman provided the theme of last summer’s concert finale, and Matthew Parillo, a two-time Emmy Award-winning MTV Networks executive, has yet to begin his songwriting career.)

Jesse Smith has been a fixture of the Atlanta music scene for years, playing in groups as diverse as the punk band The Carbonas and in indie rock groups Paper Lions and Some Soviet Station. Gentleman Jesse and His Men was created in 2005, inspired by the energetic power-pop of the 70s. He brought over 5 million audience members to their feet for over six years in this quintessential role. Now he comes to George's in San Rafael with a one-night performance of BROADWAY, June 1, 2012 at 8:30 p.m.

(5/9/2012) THE RRAZZ ROOM, San Francisco’s premiere nightclub, presents the debut solo engagement of Valerie Simpson running now through May 13. Ms. Simpson wrote some of the greatest love songs of a generation with her husband and writing partner, Nick Ashford, including “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “You’re All I Need To Get By,” “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand)” and “Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing.” But when he died of throat cancer in August at the age of 70, Simpson was cast adrift. After spending more than four decades together, she didn't know if she would ever get back on stage. Valerie performs all their greatest hits in this moving concert experience. (5/9/2012) As the concluding concert of its 2011–12 season—Chamber Treasures Meet Chicago Jazz—The Orion Ensemble presents “All That Jazz!” featuring a world premiere by guest pianist Miguel de la Cerna, a Fauré quartet and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Performances are May 6 at Music Institute of Chicago’s Nichols Concert Hall in Evanston, May 9 at Roosevelt University’s Ganz Memorial Hall in Chicago and May 13 at Fox Valley Presbyterian Church in Geneva.
