Brian McKnight and The Duke Ellington Orchestra Perform at the Blue Note, Now thru 5/18

(5/16/2012) R&B vocalist Brian McKnight has spent the better part of the last two decades on top of the charts, churning out one romantic hit after another for the Mercury, Motown, Warner Bros. and E1 Music labels. The multi-instrumentalist and 16-time Grammy nominee will explore some relatively new musical territory as a frontman for The Duke Ellington Orchestra from tonight, May 16 through May 18 at the Blue Note. The Ellington Orchestra will perform without McKnight on May 19.

(5/15/2012) Concerts for City Greens is dedicating four of this summer’s free, outdoor concerts to the music of its illustrious song contest judges. The award-winning series, that brings the sounds of music to heart of Midtown, will showcase Amanda McBroom (May 30), Neil Sedaka (August 1), Ann Hampton Callaway (September 12) and Michael John LaChuisa (October 3). These four – plus David Friedman and Matthew Parillo – are serving as judges for the first Concerts for City Greens Songwriting Contest. (The quadruple-platinum songwriter and Today Show regular David Friedman provided the theme of last summer’s concert finale, and Matthew Parillo, a two-time Emmy Award-winning MTV Networks executive, has yet to begin his songwriting career.)

(5/13/2012) Gentleman Jesse and His Men is set to perform with Barreracudas tonight, May 13, 2012. Jesse Smith has been a fixture of the Atlanta music scene for years, playing in groups as diverse as the punk band The Carbonas and in indie rock groups Paper Lions and Some Soviet Station. Gentleman Jesse and His Men was created in 2005, inspired by the energetic power-pop of the 70s. After two critically acclaimed albums, the 2006 7” Don't Wanna Know (Where You Been Tonight) and 2008's self-titled Gentlemen Jesse and His Men, Jesse and his men have produced a new album and gone back on the road.

Ms. Simpson wrote some of the greatest love songs of a generation with her husband and writing partner, Nick Ashford, including “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “You’re All I Need To Get By,” “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand)” and “Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing.” But when he died of throat cancer in August at the age of 70, Simpson was cast adrift.
